Mind The Gap Symposium (Humanities)
In this project, we learned about the depth of inequality in the United States through mathematics and humanities. We crafted a Symposium in which we displayed our data and panelists argued their mindsets and points. It was an incredible success!
------------------------------------------------------------------------ My main takeaway from the Humanities portion of this project was no doubt the skills I received from being a panelist. Being a natural debater in my daily life, the role felt natural. However, I didn't expect my understanding to go as deep as it did. I became very familiar with my topic of Wage Inequality By Race, and I could argue it just as well now as I did then. I was also intrigued by the depth of planning in the project. I doubted our ability to fund raise and get the community involved, but we pulled through, and I greatly admire those roles. In my future endeavors, I will keep these social issues in mind. I do normally anyway, but it has become so clear how heated people get about them; how much they effect and bring emotions out of people. I hope this project's long-lasting effect will stay with me. The importance of equality and equity, and the never ending complexity they bring, and, just maybe, I'll be able to argue my point as well as I did then. |
Memorable MomentMy favorite moment of the symposium was when our custodian came as a guest panelist. He relayed how he works two full time jobs and only wants his mother to be healthy and his sister to go to college. It was incredibly surprising, and amazingly inspiring. Everyone clapped when he finished speaking.

Collect Them all!During the first section of our Symposium, I gave out passports. The guests who visited each statistician table would receive a pin as a reward.
